New Feature in the Upcoming Release of DITAToo: Publishing Profiles

Well, it’s still not official, but we ourselves like this new feature so much that I can’t wait to share it with you even before the new version is officially released.

Suppose you have a DITA map. The map refers to topics in which you are extensively using conditional attributes, such as @product or@platform to conditionalize content. In the current version of DITAToo, when you are specifying publishing settings, you can see the attributes and their values used throughout the map. You can select the values that you want to include into the output, and DITAToo will generate an output accordingly.

What was missing is the ability to store a certain combination of attributes and their values as a profile. You could create different profiles so that each profile would represent a certain combination of attributes and selected values. Then when publishing, instead of manually selecting the attribute values, you could just select the profile you want to use for this particular output.

Plus if you wanted to generate an output outside DITAToo (for example, using FrameMaker for a PDF output), you had to create a ditaval file for your map manually.

These are the issues that we are addressing in the upcoming release of DITAToo. Now you’ll be able to:

  • Create multiple publishing profiles. In each profile, you select the attribute values that you want to include into an output.
  • When publishing through DITAToo, you can either manually select the attribute values to be included into this output or choose one of the profiles that you created.
  • If you are generating an output outside DITAToo, you can select a new option called Get Files for External Publishing. You will be prompted to select the location on your local drive where you want to download the map with all relevant files (topics, grapchis, etc.). Plus you select the profiles that you want to be downloaded together with the map. DITAToo will transform the profiles into ditaval files and download them to the specified location.
  • Additionally, you’ll be able to separately generate a ditaval file from a profile and download it to your local drive for publishing through FrameMaker or other tools.

By the way, you can see a preview of some of these features at the eSeminar that we did together with Adobe on November 22. You can view a recording of the session here.

We are planning to announce general availability of the new version of DITAToo very soon.

Stay tuned!
